The Cathay Crossbody is named for a most amazing woman - Cathy Williams. (1842-1893)
Cathy was born to an enslaved mother and free father. At the age of 17, on November 15, 1866, she enlisted for a three-year engagement in the US Army, passing herself off as a man. Cathy Williams then became known as William Cathay. She was assigned to the 38th U.S. After passing as a man for 3 years, it was discovered that she was female and she was honorably discharged in 1868.
She then signed up with an emerging all-black regiment that would eventually become part of the legendary Buffalo Soldiers.
Though over 400 women served in the Civil War posing as male soldiers, Williams was the first African American woman to enlist and the only documented woman to serve in the United States Army, while disguised as a man, during the Indian Wars. She is also the only known female Buffalo Soldier. Her determination to serve her country demonstrates the extraordinary feats women have accomplished simply trying to live their lives. And it is in her honor, that I make the CATHAY bag.
